Seriously?

Post preface: I don't  get involved in a lot of conversations regarding the political world. Mainly because conversations I've had among family and friends don't usually end well and views and opinions run deep into people's souls.  To the core of their beings.  You tell someone you disagree with their political views and it's like you just kicked their dog or pinched their (ugly) baby.  Jeff and I will discuss and banter because we've learned to agree to disagree.  Neither one of us like to sleep on the couch, so we kiss and make up.  I also know that he's a crazy Canook so he doesn't know much and he knows I'm just an imbecile of a housewife so I don't know much either.  It's an even wash.

(Don't be hatin' on me, Canada!  You know I love you!)

While we both have generally viewed ourselves as Republicans, he voted for Obama and I voted for McCain.  So, in a sense, we cancelled out each other's votes.  That's how much political clout we have.
...

Since it's swarming in the media, I know that most of you probably received the same letter or phone call I did yesterday.  The ones with concerns over the upcoming address our current President plans to deliver to the students of this nation. The ones letting parents opt out of having their kids watch the address during school via TV.

By the way everyone is reacting, you'd think Obama was going to deliver the first ever Presidential address on sex education.  With graphic posters and correct anatomical vocabulary.  And free samples.

I really don't get what all the fretting is about.  He is our elected President.  He is the leader of our country.  I'm assuming he just wants to encourage our students to stay in school, work hard, live up to their potential, and make the most of their education.  You can see more about it here.

What's the harm in that?

Am I missing something?  Is there a hidden message or agenda somewhere there that I, in my imbecilic mind, can't see?

Not everyone likes Obama or his politics.  That is fine.  But he is our President and, because of that, I will continue to have respect for that office.  Does it mean I have to agree with everything he says?  No.  Does it mean that I have lost a voice of my own of how I think things should be handled in this country?  No.   But just because my views may or may not always be in line with his, it does not discredit his position nor does it make him all bad or all good.  HE IS OUR PRESIDENT.  He is in a position of leadership.  Our countries' freedom to vote put him there.  So whether or not you like what he is doing every second of everyday, does not make him a saint nor the devil incarnate.

We've forgotten how to be fair in this country.

I remember when Pres. Reagan was shot, I was in 3rd grade.  All the students in our school wrote "get well" cards to him and we sent him bags and bags of jelly beans - that being the presidential candied treat of his choice.  We were so excited to have some type of small connection with our President.  Though we'd never meet him face to face, we were aware of him and he was aware of us.

But were people all up in arms thinking there was some political propaganda that we were being put through in the form of telling the President we were sorry he got shot?  I think not.

So, now we have a situation in 2009 in which our President wants to talk to our kids.  Not about stimulus packages and health care reform, or clunkers for cash, or the housing market. He wants to take the time to talk to them about what they are ALL experiencing right now.  A common thread - their schooling.  He, of all people, should be the one to deliver such an address. As the first American elected as President without Caucasian coloring, he has PROVEN that if you work hard, don't let shut doors get in your way, and never give up, you can do anything.  Anyone can have success if they are willing to work for it.

He wants to talk and encourage and uplift.

But we're not willing to let him do that?

Really?  I guess we haven't come as far as I thought.

It's been interesting to read different articles and people's comments on the situation. I'm not sure how I feel. Luckily, Jacob's school is taping it and it will be shown in individual classrooms at a later date. The teacher will send home a note before hand so we can opt out if we want to. I'm glad that I will have the chance to watch it before hand, but I'm would have let Jacob watch it if they were doing it live. I do think people are making too big a deal about it!

Also, I just got catching fire! I'm a little behind. How is it?

Melissa - the book is good so far. I'm on chapter 6. I'm really anxious to see how this is all going to play out. Great reading - just like the Hunger Games.

That really is interesting. I am shocked that people are making such a huge deal over it! It's so good to see that you are doing well! We were in Utah for a little bit for Trent's sisters wedding and I wanted to come see all of you down in Farmington SO bad. It was just SO crazy busy helping with the wedding. (and 3 families to split time with) Got to love it! So I will have to see you next time for sure! I miss you and love you! Glad to see all is well!

Actually, My mom WOULD say he IS the "Devil Incarnate." ;0 She called me yesterday to SPECIFICALLY advise me to call the school and ask what their plans were with "this CRAPPY Obama video." I told her we already knew that it'd be shown next week. She then went on a RAMPAGE for several minutes telling me EVERYONE should "opt out!" I just had to say, "Yes, We understand your extreme HATRED for Obama." to get her to stop.

BUT, I think she is getting THIS upcoming video MIXED UP with the [now infamous] video that Eagle Bay (under the decision of their PTA Pres.) showed their school at a "Welcome Back assembly." THAT video was made by Hollywood as a "surprise gift" for his Inauguration & Obama didn't have anything to do with it. At the end of THAT video, people are saying something to the effect of, "I will SERVE Pres. Obama." which is NOT how it goes - the President SERVES our country. So, that freaked people out.

BUT, what is going to be shown on 9/8 is a DIFFERENT video which my mom (& others) can't distinguish between, apparently.

Exactly Suzanne. Jeff showed me that video last night (it didn't ruffle my feathers) but it did have a more "Pro-Obama" angle to it. The address that will be in school will be about school and education - not about Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher giving their praise and servitude to Obama.

Brent and I were just talking about this at breakfast this morning. I don't get what all the fuss is about either. Someone needs to talk to the children in America about the importance of education and goal setting because, heaven knows, NOT all parent's are. Whatever.

I agree! I think to many people aren't getting the facts. They all think it is the same celebrity speech but it isn't. I believe in letting our children learn and grow and respect the president of the USA.

On another note, I think you might get all of your readers to post a comment because of all the controversy. You go girl, good way to get readers. :)

Very well spoken.

Kristen, I couldn't agree with you more. I say AMEN to all that you have expressed. Thanks for being a voice of reason.

Well, this is an awfully brave blog post from a Utahn! Loved it! I have to say, Kristen, I seriously don't get the outrage over the President wanting to address American students regarding their education. I tend to lean a bit more to the Left than the average LDS so I figured that was why it wasn't bothering me. Nice to hear there are others out there who are also un-bothered by it :)

Kristen I love reading your blog. Totally agree with ya. I dont understand what the fuss is about!

Amen. Amen. Amen.

(I didn't want to say more, but I will ...)
Good thing there isn't anything else going on in the "whole wide world" that everyone can be so obsessed / distracted with a lil' Presidential address.
Most parents don't even know what is going on at school or being taught at school anyway; at least this way they know one day.
And as for the kids. Those old enough to understand can form their own opinion, and the younger ones won't care.

Greg and I were just having this discussion! I totally agree with you (both of us do, actually). Lucky you though. At least you were given the option to "opt out". Our district made the decision for us...it won't be shown at any of our schools! So what is that teaching the kids??

As always you are a sound voice of reason. I wish more people could think like you. We opted for a charter school this year for our children, but they don't have the equiptment to show the video. We were actually going to watch it with our kids later and discuss what was in it. Keiann said there was lots of hoopla at school(between kids)about it, so we discussed with her how we respect our president, and others views and that we thought it was neat the the president would take time out of his day to talk to kids. I felt that showed how much he does care for our children's education.
